Reading

Having spoken with your Year 6 teachers, we know you share our love of reading and understand that frequent reading for pleasure has many benefits: better academic results, greater empathy, and all-round emotional development. You will be pleased to learn that at Treviglas Academy we take reading very seriously and create various opportunities for our young people to engage with interesting reading material.

Our  weekly tutor programme includes silent reading, and our team of talented form tutors endeavour to provide varied book boxes, containing both fiction and non-fiction catering for a wide variety of interests. Of course, we request that all our students come to school each day with a book they enjoy in the event that opportunities for silent reading arise. We know that regular silent reading helps develop focus and concentration, as well as being an excellent source of entertainment, relaxation and stress reduction.

Throughout the year we provide various literacy themed competitions, some of which you will undoubtedly be familiar with. In March we celebrate World Book Day by welcoming local authors, book shops and theatre groups and our lessons frequently take on a book related angle so you are fully immersed in the wonderful world of reading for one  full  school  day. We also run an annual Extreme Reading Competition, with great prizes up for grabs and the opportunity to have your winning photograph displayed around school! In addition to these opportunities, our English department will also hold creative writing competitions for the enthusiastic wordsmiths among you. Again, these will be incentivised to give you even more reason to get involved.

Finally, our school library is a special space within our school and will be open for you to borrow books and read quietly and comfortably. Currently, our library is undergoing various exciting changes. This year we worked very hard with various fundraising initiatives - car washes, bake sales, raffles, fancy dress competitions - and raised approximately £5000 which we have used for a large book order. Along with plans for new shelving and a more modern layout and design, our library is set to become a fantastic learning zone with contemporary reading material to suit a full range of interests.

We recognise the enormous power of reading and very much look forward to welcoming you to  Treviglas  Academy, where  we  hope  you  will help us continue creating a positive learning culture where ideas, free enquiry and a love of reading are maintained.
